Press Release's regarding COVID19

Press Release 7-21-2020 weekly update and school info

PRESS RELEASE
July 17, 2020
Release:  IMMEDIATE
From:    Dawn James, Kit Carson County Department of Public Health and Environment Director, PIO

In response to the Governor’s Mandatory Mask order, the Kit Carson County Board of Health believes in personal accountability.  The Colorado Indoor Mandatory Mask order is designed for public safety and the slowing of the upward trend of COVID-19 in Colorado.  Use your best judgment regarding the use of a face covering and be respectful of those who choose to wear them and businesses that require them.

The Kit Carson County Sheriff also responds with the following statement:  “The Kit Carson County Sheriff’s office will not enforce this order. Sheriff Ridnour believes that it is your right to wear a mask or not wear a mask. Please respect businesses that require you to wear a mask before entering their place of business - that is also their right to require you to wear a mask.  The Sheriff’s office will continue to do their job which is to keep the peace.”

For further information or questions regarding the order, please contact Dawn James, Kit Carson County Public Health Director at 719-346-7158, ext. 116.

End

Point of clarification regarding the Governor’s Mandatory Mask Order.  Kit Carson County is not “opting out” of the order.  “Opting Out” is not a choice that has been given to us as a county by the State of Colorado.  We believe residents of Kit Carson County are able to use their best judgment regarding their compliance with a state law, no different than obeying traffic laws, etc.  Businesses that hold licenses (retail, restaurants, liquor stores and bars, cosmetology, chiropractic, medical, dental, etc.) all are required to follow the state law or risk losing their license and/or be fined.  It is their right to require a mask and refuse service to anyone who comes into their place of business and doesn’t follow the mask order.  If a place of business asks someone to leave, that is their right.  If a customer refuses to leave, the business owner could notify local law enforcement regarding trespassing, and law enforcement would then be required to respond under those circumstances.  Unfortunately, some people misunderstood the intent of response that was published this morning and have been saying Kit Carson County “opted out” which is not accurate.
